‘WE ARE KINGS, NOT ‘TRADITIONAL RULERS’ … SAYS ASAGBA OF ASABA EDOZIEN

By Leroy C Edozien

Asagba Professor Chike Edozien Asagba of Asaba, has called for abandonment of the term ‘traditional rulers’. He said the term was a relic of colonial rule. “Where else in the world are there ‘traditional rulers?’,” he asked. “We are Kings, not ‘traditional rulers'”, he asserted.

Asagba Professor Edozien was speaking while receiving Distinguished Senator Peter Onyelukachi Nwaoboshi who presented his report card to Anioma Kings at the Asagba’s palace.

Responding, Senator Nwaoboshi said that he would take this request to the Constitution Amendment Committee  which has accepted that kings should have their functions enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Asagba described the visit of Senator Nwaoboshi as ‘unprecedented’, in the sense that this was the first time that an elected representative had met with the Anioma Royal fathers to present an account of his/her stewardship.
