The 14th edition of the biennial African Women Cup of Nation 2022 happening in Morocco kick started Saturday 2 July, 2022 and will run till 23 July, 2022.
Morocco in their opening game defeated Burkina Faso by a lone goal.
Today Monday 4 July 2022, the defending champions Nigeria Super Falcons will play Bayana Bayana of South Africa in a group C opener. The group C comprising of Burundi and Botswana will see only two teams from the group progressing to the next stage.
The falcons coach, Randy Wuldrum has said that there will be nothing like underrating any team and as defending champions the team will go into each match with a strong mentality to win and win convincingly.
The Nigeria Super Falcons caption Onome Ebi has this to say ahead of today game; “we are aware of the intense competition that is going to play out here in Morocco, we have no illusions. Women’s football has continued to grow in a lot of other African nations, faster than anyone can imagine.”
Note that Nigeria’s Super Falcons remain the most successful African women’s team at the CAF Women’s African Cup of Nations [WAFCON] after winning 9 out of the 11 editions of the competition.
The competition which was slated for last year was postponed due to the outbreak of COVID-19 will for the first time see 12 teams participate as against 8 teams it was used to be.
The confederation of African football has divided the 12 teams into three groups A, B and C.
GroupA:
Morocco, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Uganda.
Group B:
Cameroon, Zambia, Tunisia, Togo.
Group C:
Nigeria, South Africa, Burundi, Botswana.
