The traditional ruler of Awkuzu in Oyi Local Government Area ofAnambra State, Igwe Professor Charles Anikweze, has called on government at all levels to protect journalists and media practioners from intimidation and harrasement.
Speaking when members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Anambra State Council paid him a courtesy visit in his palace at Awkuzu, the royal father lamemted incessant intimidation and attacks on journalists while performing constitutional duties, and urged the government to provide enabling environments to protect the media practictioners from threats.
He stated that journalists as the watchdog of the society must be shielded from unecessarry harassement, and commended them for performing their duties against all odds.
Igwe Anikweze, who condemned poor condition of service of teachers in the country, said the ugly development is the cause of frequent strikes and the bone of contention between the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.
He however encouraged the teachers and lecturers to continue to perform their duties despite the poor condition of their service, reminding them of the old parlance that teachers’ reward are in heaven, even as he stressed that posterity will never forget them even if government fails to remember them.
Earlier in his remark, the Secretary of NUJ in the state, Comrade Aloysius Ofodile, explained that NUJ is partnering with the traditional rulers to promote people’s cultural heritage.
On his part, the Chairman of NUJ Committee on Protocol/ Information Officers’ Summit, Comrade Nnamdi Nweke, informed the traditional ruler that they came to invite him to an all-important summit on protocol/ information management being organised by the union on 28th August, 2022, adding that NUJ wants to partner with traditional rulers, corporate organisations and institutions to showcase and streamline the work of protocol officers, information officers and public relations officers in the society.
In a vote of thanks, the Secretary of the committee, Dr.Obinna Obiadi, thanked the royal father for hosting members of NUJ, and commended him for his good leadership in Awkuzu.
